Rare Colors

The most sought after colors, of course, are the most rare...

The most beloved color of course is cobalt blue. Even if a piece the size of a pea was found, it was considered a great find. If someone found a large piece, it was talked about for a week throughout town (Gtmo is a very small town). As much as we all loved our blues, there are some even more rare and beautiful shades of sea glass such as...teals, bright aquas, limes, purples, pinks, golds and the ever elusive red.

Red is by far the most sought after color and rightfully so. Red bottles were so rarely made because gold was actually used in the making of red glass. Few people had the means 100 years ago to afford such luxury! While I have had the great fortune to have found a few pieces here and there, I currently do not have any examples on hand...hopefully in the future!

The last color I have to mention is black sea glass, or as I call it, Pirate Glass. The Carribean has been a very active and thriving area for centuries. Old time ships carrying all sorts of goods used the calm warm waters for safe refuge. Guantanamo Bay would have been a popular place, large cliffs on either side and a central route to open sea. It would have been the perfect place to make anchor. Why mention all of this in reference to black sea glass? Well, many of the goods transported were in beautiful black bottles. They were used for preservation for everything from spirits to parfumes and many of them found their way to the bottom of the bay. Who knows how or why but there they are...Black sea glass is my absolute favorite!
